On November 11, 2024 (Monday), Ambassador Lee Eun-yong hosted a welcome dinner for Cho Hong-sik, the Special Envoy of the President, who was visiting Azerbaijan to attend the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29).
Special Envoy Cho emphasized Korea's vision for climate and the environment, as well as its role in the international community, ahead of his special address at COP29. He explained the importance of multilateral cooperation in overcoming the global climate crisis. He also introduced specific policy initiatives related to carbon neutrality and green growth that South Korea would propose at COP29, stressing the need for strong international support.
Ambassador Lee expressed confidence that Special Envoy Cho’s remarks and South Korea's climate policies would become key agenda items at COP29. He noted his expectation that, through this, South Korea would play a leading role in addressing climate change and advancing the transition to a sustainable green economy. Furthermore, the Ambassador promised to work even more actively to strengthen regional climate governance, including cooperation between South Korea and Azerbaijan.
Attendees expressed their hope that, through COP29, South Korea’s climate and environmental vision and commitment would gain wider recognition, and they agreed on the need to create a new turning point in global climate crisis response through multilateral cooperation.
